The primary goal of the CDL Truck Driver is to operate a diesel-powered tractor-trailer combination transporting steel products, in loose or packaged form, safely and efficiently. To perform this job successfully, the individual must have a Class “A” driver’s license, and a certified DOT Medical Card. The individual should be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Perform proper Pre and Post-trip inspections as regulated by the DOT. Maintains driver log according to DOT regulations regarding mileage, driving hours, etc. Learns all delivery routes As necessary, assists customers and/or vendors in loading/unloading trucks, using any special equipment. Performs all deliveries and pick-ups in a safe and efficient manner. Essential Skills Check vehicles to ensure mechanical, safety and emergency equipment is in good working order. Maneuver trucks into loading or unloading positions, following signals from the loading crew and checking that the vehicle and loading equipment are properly positioned. Collect delivery instructions from appropriate sources to verify instructions and route. Report vehicle defects, accidents, traffic violations, or damages to the vehicle. Secure cargo for transport, using straps, blocks, chains, binders, or tarps. Obtain receipts or signatures for delivered goods and collect payment for services when required. Inventory and inspect goods to be moved to determine quantities and conditions. Follow appropriate safety procedures Operate equipment to exchange necessary information with base, supervisor, or other drivers. Read bills of lading to determine assignment details. Check conditions of trailers after contents have been unloaded to ensure there has been no damage. Couple/uncouple trailers by changing trailer jack positions, connecting/disconnecting air or electrical lines, and manipulating fifth-wheel locks. Check all load-related documentation to ensure that it is complete and accurate. Read and interpret maps prior to departure/use of GPS (via PeopleNet unit) to determine vehicle routes. Crank trailer landing gear up/down to safely secure vehicles. Climb ladders to inspect loads ensuring cargo is secure. Place empty runners and pallets on trailers to facilitate movement and placement of goods. Operate idle reductions systems or auxiliary power systems to generate power from alternative sources such as fuel cells, to reduce idling time, to heat or cool truck cabins, or to provide power for other equipment (over-the-road drivers only).
